Making a telephone call, sending a text message or reading emails on a mobile phone from across the European Union will cost less from Wednesday. The tariff cuts, which complete a European Union ruling from 2007, were proposed by the EU’s executive arm at the end of 2008 and won approval by the European Parliament and member states.
Following the new price curbs, which take effect on July 1, it will be up to 60 percent cheaper to send mobile phone text messages while travelling in the EU or to surf the Web by laptop. “All Europeans making calls or sending texts with their mobiles can experience the EU’s single market without borders. In what may be some of the worst cell phone etiquette ever recorded, President Obama had a speech interrupted by a reporter’s ringtone yesterday.
The moment, video captured and spreading quickly on YouTube, happened during a White House speech about gay rights. The ringtone, which is difficult to hear in the video itself, apparently featured something resembling the Aflac quacking duck sound you hear in the insurance company’s commercials.

Two facts strike the eye: the incredibly small amount for which The Pirate Bay was sold, compared to its huge popularity and worldwide influence, and the fact that the site which has always been perceived as independent and quite controversial, was sold at all. The second fact explains the latter: yes, The Pirate Bay is one of the top 100 visited websites in the world, but it (and its owners) is also encumbered by the recent loss of a very important lawsuit. Quickly after rumors started spreading last week that actor Jeff Goldblum had died, it became apparent that the story was a hoax. Fellow actor Kevin Spacey even publicly confirmed that Goldblum was alive and well.
But that didn’t stop the story from spreading wildly on Twitter, and even being reported on the Today Show in Australia. Last night, Stephen Colbert gave the story its proper mocking, including deriding our collective use of Twitter as a news source (“I don’t see how [twitter user] delicioushair could get this wrong?”) Read the rest of this entry »
